The main ground floor area houses fiction, non-fiction and non-book resource sections. This area has a Teaching and Learning Zone with an interactive TV and full computer facilities. In addition to the study areas, there are comfortable seating sections and the control desk. This area can be arranged according to the school’s requirements, for example, study, conferences and meetings.
The Library Resource Centre’s facilities and the wide range of resources provide all staff and pupils with opportunities to develop or extend ICT skills, research and retrieval skills. Reading for pleasure is also of paramount importance to the school. Our aim is to provide an environment in which pupils are encouraged and guided in their choice of reading materials. All resources are catalogued using an automated library system with fingerprint recognition technology.
A list of books created for you to read throughout your time at Standish.
There are lots of rewards for reading at Standish, but often we can get stuck in a rut – reading the same types of books by the same authors and not really leaving our comfort zone. The Reading Canon is designed to help you challenge yourself!
It’ll help you develop a broader perspective of the world around you, improve your vocabulary and give you the chance to unwind with a great story you might not have picked up otherwise! Also, the wide range of books on the list will all count towards your Standish Canon Graduation target.
ach time you successfully quiz on a book from the Reading Canon for your year group, you can tick it off on your way to graduate for the year. You can see below that there are different levels to aim for and don’t forget that you’ll read some of the books in English classes anyway!
| Level | Standish Canon Books Read |
|---|---|
| Graduation | 4 |
| Graduation with Honours | 6 |
| Graduation with First Class Honours | 10+ |
Your English teacher will be keeping track of how many books you have read and quizzed on as the year goes on and encouraging you to read as many as you can. You can keep track yourself by filling in one of our Standish Bookmarks as you read.
There will be awards for all pupils who graduate at any level before the end of the academic year – so you have lots of time to aim for the very top and challenge yourself!
Genres include science fiction, mystery, historical, fantasy and dystopian writing. There are some amazing, diverse authors, past and present, as well as a great selection of non-fiction titles and even some graphic novels too; there really is something for everyone!
We want to challenge you to read as many books off this list as possible before graduation in the Summer. You can find full lists for each year group below. Speak to your English teacher or Mrs Charnock in the LRC if you need any more information.
