Intent

Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive, aspirational, and engaging, ensuring all pupils have access to language learning and feel a sense of achievement.

Key Intentions:

Foster enjoyment and challenge through high expectations in communication.
Develop linguistic competency and cultural awareness.
Promote resilience and independence through structured progression.

Pupils will:

Gain a secure understanding of a range of tenses and grammatical structures.
Enrich their vocabulary in both English and the target language.
Communicate effectively across the four skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Apply prior knowledge to new contexts, building resilience and confidence.
Use logic and pattern recognition to understand and apply grammar and vocabulary.

This will be achieved through a well-sequenced Scheme of Work, incorporating:

A variety of authentic materials.
Regular review informed by pupil and teacher voice, AfL strategies, and educational developments.
Differentiated pathways to ensure engagement, enjoyment, and achievement for all learners.

The MFL curriculum aims to nurture the next generation of linguists who can apply their language skills confidently and creatively across disciplines and in real-world contexts.

Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is a subject which builds on the basics taught at Key Stage 2 in various feeder primary schools. Standish Community High School boasts exceptional language learning facilities. We have a team of dedicated and enthusiastic language staff offering GCSE qualifications in French and Spanish. Contact with Target Language countries is promoted via trips to France and Spain.
